Help Me Bring the World to My History Students' Projects

My 9th graders unfortunately come from one of the most isolated and economically depressed counties in North Carolina. Yet they are eager - and desperately need - to get a glimpse of the wider world that they can someday challenge.

MySpace and Wikipedia. These two sites are where most of my students' familiarity with the World Wide Web ends, far short of the wealth of diverse resources that they need. One major problem when doing computer-based research is the need to organize and save research materials. This is particularly true when students are working on a longer-term project. Because our school is currently transitioning to project-based learning to boost student achievement, this need for students to save their research is now even greater.

All that each my students needs is a simple and inexpensive USB flash drive that will work with any of our school library's computers, mobile labs, and their home computers where applicable. These will let them work on their projects in a variety of locations and organize themselves as they progress towards the final paper or project.

Your help will bring the World to my History students by removing a major roadblock to their research process. With these flash drives, my 9th graders will learn the skills to prepare them for college and open up the possibilities beyond their current paradigm.
