Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in a lower socio-economic area in Los Angeles County. Most of my students are on the free or reduced lunch/breakfast program. My students come from non-English speaking backgrounds.

The students in my room need to hear as much English as possible. They love listening to stories as well as following along as the stories are being read. Many of the students are not able to hear English spoken to them at home and they do not hear stories read to them in English. Listening to stories helps the students to become fluent readers and fluent English language speakers. My students are always asking me if they can use the listening center, and they enjoy all the listening activities. At this time I can only have 6-8 children at a time on the listening center.

I need an additional listening center so that more of my students can use it at one time. Listening centers are a great way to reinforce what is taught in the classroom, it gives the students another opportunity to hear, review and practice what has been taught in class. It also gives the children one more opportunity to hear the English language spoken fluently.

Your support of this project will help my students become fluent readers and speakers of english. It will help them learn what is being taught in class in a fun, and engaging way.
