Engaging Students in the 21st Century

My students need 21st century tools, such as a Hamilton Digital Video Camcorder Explorer Kit, Kensington Wireless Presenter with Laser Pointer, Eggspert game, and three Franklin Spelling Ace Pro and Puzzle Solvers to engage them in the learning process and enhance their reading and thinking skills.

Mrs. B. North Little Rock High School
North Little Rock, AR Grades 9-12

Help! We're stuck in the 20th century! I teach English to tenth grade students at a high school in Arkansas. Our high school is split between two campuses, ours with ninth and tenth graders. I teach double blocked students, which means I see my students every day for one and a half hours instead of the every other day schedule. Even on a good day, it is hard to keep class from being "boring". The most frequent complaint being: "all we ever do is read and write." Our school is in its fourth year of school improvement. My class is composed of the students who were within ten to twenty points of passing their eighth grade benchmark exam. These are the students who need an extra push to get motivated to learn - the ones who need a little "outside of the box" thinking to get them engaged.

Teaching English to tenth grade students is tough, but it's even tougher when the students are bored with the "old fashion" methods of learning. In a large urban school, 1475 students at our ninth and tenth grade campus alone, it is tough to modernize every classroom on a tight budget. Group activities and buddy projects are great, but with Google being the "go to" place for information it is a challenge to get students to want to learn. Getting students involved is crucial to engagement and thus crucial to learning. Providing a variety of learning opportunities is essential in a class that meets every day. And English class isn't just about reading and writing anymore. Our students need to be literate in literature, for sure, but also in electronic media, such as video and electronic resources. Students need to be able to create and give presentations. They need to be able to create electronic projects. Gone are the days when you read a book and watch a movie and call that incorporating media. Today, with so many technological tools, the students can write a script and film their own movie version of a story.

Video camcorders open up new doors for projects. Students can record presentations, act out scenes from literature, and create interesting and innovative book reports. Even students who are too shy to present to an audience can participate by pre-recording their presentations - goodbye stage fright! For those students who are teachers at heart, a wireless presenter makes their slide shows easy and fun. They are free to make their presentations and interact with the rest of the class providing more engagement for all students. An "Eggspert" quiz system turns any topic into a competitive and fun way to review and retain information. Students who would be bored with question and answer sessions or completing a study guide become fierce competitors when there is glory to be won on a "game show". And when it is student verses the giant literature book, an electronic dictionary is not as intimidating as getting out an equally large dictionary. Students can also practice spelling and memorization of terms with the games included on the dictionaries. English language learners benefit from the quick reference as well.

Your help can get my students engaged and motivated to learn. Your donation will provide my students modern tools that will allow them to create innovative projects that will inspire them to go above and beyond the normal book report. They will no longer be afraid of looking up a word in the dictionary. They will enjoy quizzes and retain the knowledge that wins them the game. You can make this happen for them.
