Are We Measuring Up?

My students need 3 digital thermometers, 35 rulers, beakers, and graduated cylinders.

Please help my students "measure up" in the areas of math and science. I am an 8th grade science teacher at a school that is identified as an "Equity Plus" school. This means that over half of our student population is on free/reduced lunch. As their teacher I cannot make an impact on their economic situation but with your help, we can impact them intellectually. My classroom is VERY diverse. The student population at my school includes African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/Pacific and Native American. On last year's End-of-Grade Math test, this group of students scored low in measurement related areas (computation, graphing, etc.). These skills are important in not only math but science as well.

The obstacle I face is the funding for needed hands-on supplies. My students greatly benefit from hands-on activities that allow them to use various math and science skills. I have gotten some materials donated from a local business, others from a small grant and have purchased some on my own. The items needed now are those that will directly relate to measurement skills that will help them in both math and science.

All year long my students are involved in many experiments/investigations that require them to measure, compute, graph, etc. We need graduated cylinders, thermometers, beakers and rulers that will help them measure volume, distance, density and much, much more. After gathering data, students then create data tables, charts, graphs for communicating their results. With your help, the students this year and years to come will have the materials/equipment necessary to build their math and science skills.

You will make a difference not just now but in YEARS TO COME! The materials/equipment you can provide will last many, many years. Many of my students are not accustomed to having anonymous people give from the heart. In fact, many of them have not been on the receiving end of continuous kindness. When someone gives to our class, I ALWAYS let them know that others really do care about them and want them to learn. Anything you can help provide will be used to help these students build confidence and skills in the areas of both science and math.
