Mrs. P. South Jones Elementary School
Ellisville, MS Grades PreK-2

I teach in a rural school district with approximately 1,100 students in my school. The students that I teach range in ages from six to eight and have different interests and learning styles.

Most of my students have grown up with technology surrounding them. At home, they play with video games, watch television, surf the Internet, and listen to iPods. As a public school teacher, I struggle keeping my students' attention as I teach important reading and math skills using workbooks, paper, and pencils.

This project would require five Leapster Learning Systems, five carrying cases, five adapters, and five Leapster Educational Games: First Grade. Each week, five students would be allowed to take home the Leapster Learning System to review skills such as phonics, rhyming, addition, subtraction, and spelling. By sending home the video game system, students would be able to practice and master state required skills using a video game system that makes learning fun and exciting. Each week five different students would be chosen to check out the game systems.

By funding this project, students would be able to enjoy learning in a fun and interactive way. As we grow towards the future, I feel that it is important for teachers to use as much technology as possible, and meet the students where they are in our technology filled world.
