Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In an inner-city school set in a area of high-need, where more then 80% of the students meet the poverty level for free lunch, you will find my classroom of second graders. Our classroom is a co-teaching environment in which 40% of our students are serviced with IEPs. So many of the students who are not considered to be the special education students are also performing below grade level. My students work had and want to excel but they struggle to meet grade level. Part of our school's reading program is to introduce students to various literary genres starting in the early grades. The only flaw with this is that most of our books in the building for many genres are higher level and are only good for students in fourth or fifth grade. This presents a challenge in teaching our students who are in the lower grades or on lower reading levels. They can learn so much and retain so much information, even the special needs students. They have inquiring minds that thirst for knowledge but it needs to be presented to them on their level. This is why I am asking that you support my classroom in our search to feed our brains with knowledge of those before us in a set of biographies. Many times our classrooms become very bond to scheduling and with out the appropriate level of materials our students are missing out on so much of the basic foundations and explorations in history. I have also requested a set of poetry books because this too is an important literary genre and an entertaining subject that inspires students to write and succeed. I'm hoping that with your help I will be able to bring the joy of reading for a purpose back into my classroom. My students need "brain food" and the primary grades are the most influential years to get students eager and excited about learning. With your help my students will be able to learn about important and influential people from history. The biographies will be used so that students can work in small groups studying an individual and create a poster highlighting the major impacts they have had on society. Groups will then present their posters to the class so that all students become familiar with the importance of americans of the past that have molded on world of today. With the poetry books requested, students will work in pairs to read an interpret different poems. Students will then write about how the poem made them feel. Then students will work together to write a poem of similar context and present their work to the class in a poetry celebration. With your help my second graders will be able to gain a greater appreciation of historical figures and writing styles. This will help my students understand the different purposes for writing some of which include writing to inform, writing to invoke feeling, and creative writing.
