My students are unique individuals who have a wide range of abilities. This group of middle school students consists of learners with special needs as well as at-risk students who participate in our distance learning program. I am an Intervention Specialist who works with 7th and 8th grade special education students in a high-need community. After our traditional school day ends, I am the program coordinator for our alternative education program. This distance learning project allows students who are either at-risk of being or have already been retained to work at their own pace to demonstrate mastery of our 8th grade curriculum.

Today's students are digital natives. They use computers to interact with friends through social networks, for multimedia entertainment, and as a means for researching hobbies and interests. Most modern education programs fail to capitalize on these interests and abilities. Our school uses an outside company which hosts and creates 8th grade curriculum in an online learning environment. Since the company is based in California, most courses are not properly aligned to Ohio's content standards. Our teachers cannot edit the online curriculum as needed. We must also pay a seat license for every individual who accesses the online curriculum.

An open source classroom management system, or CMS, would solve these problems in an economical manner. One example would be Moodle, which is available as a free download. There is also no individual cost per student, teacher, or course. Our teachers could integrate lessons from the classroom and design courses to meet the strengths and needs of our learners. Students can network with teachers and other students in a dynamic learning environment. Everyone would have access to a wide variety of digital tools, such as blogs, wikis, and podcasts, in a safe and secure learning environment. In order to host such a program, we need to purchase a web server. After this initial cost our program would be free to grow along with the knowledge of our students and teachers. We would be able to prepare our students with the 21st century skills necessary for the jobs of tomorrow.

Your donation would provide the initial investment we need to launch this innovative learning environment. This is truly a grassroots project with the potential to spread throughout our school district. Few other projects can have this much impact, and your generosity is needed for its launch.
