Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Imagine a classroom where technology is being used every day. Students use various software applications such as Microsoft Office and iLife software such as iPhoto and iMovie in all subjects: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies as they create different projects and activities throughout the year. My goals over several proposals are to increase the number of computers in my classroom to allow students to work in small groups regularly. This will allow more students to be on the computer at a time without having to rotate students in groups and still allow group size to be smaller and more intimate. Part 2 will add 2 computers to my classroom for students to work independently and/or in small groups. What will students be learning on the computers? Over the past 2 years I have been slowly increasing the amount of work students do by computer with several other computers already in the classroom. Imagine a classroom where students review for a reading test by opening up a power point presentation consisting of multiple choice questions that will be on the reading test. In small groups, students read each question and click the answer they think is correct and the presentation is set to make 1 sound when the right answer is clicked and a different sound when any of the other answer choices are selected. How about this next activity? Students work independently on the computers for a writing center activity on Microsoft Word where they are asked to correct all the grammatical errors. For students who need extra help, the errors are highlighted for them or a comment is placed to remind them of a grammatical rule. One of my favorites is in math where students use a template I create in Microsoft Word to solve addition and subtraction problems using text boxes. Text boxes are very handy to remind students how many digits the answer should have and for carrying and regrouping (borrowing). Still not convinced? There is nothing better than to see student teams present a report on plants and animals using a power point presentation they created! What might be even better would be an iMovie they created using pictures from a field trip to a California mission and using the movie to teach others about mission life. MacBook Laptops will be excellent additions so that students can take home CD's and DVD's of work to share with their families rather than a folder full of worksheets that just get recycled at best. Thanks for you consideration!
