After receiving the books, I grouped students in teams of three and invited them to choose a title that truly interested them. As they read together, they discussed characters, important moments, and themes such as identity, courage, belonging, and resilience. The stories sparked meaningful conversations and helped students see themselves—and others—reflected in the pages.\r\n\r\nThe week prior, we had built simple automaton machines in class. Once students finished reading, I challenged each group to select one meaningful scene from their book and bring it to life using their automaton. They worked for several days, one hour each day, carefully planning, drawing, engineering, and revising their moving scenes. This process required deep comprehension—they had to understand the scene clearly in order to decide what should move and why. It was incredible to watch them transform reading into motion.\r\n\r\nTo conclude the project, students recorded short videos explaining their chosen scene and how their automaton represented it. They proudly described the characters, setting, and action, demonstrating both strong comprehension and growing confidence in speaking. Your support did more than provide books—it created an opportunity for collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and joyful learning. Thank you for helping my students experience stories in a way they will never forget.\r\nPlease take a look at the Google Slides that I have provided for you :\r\n\r\nhttps://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1BuME70GwSdSkQvA7djFt_Es-GcdKG7obtcm-G-yUzyg/edit?slide=id.g3c82fd04f85_0_477#slide=id.g3c82fd04f85_0_477","fullyFundedDate":1763674695457,"projectUrl":"project/books-that-celebrate-who-we-are/9640428/","projectTitle":"Books That Celebrate Who We Are","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hashemi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10215792"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4764","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":464,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":37,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":51,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"20.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.5,"schoolId":4764,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Holly Oak Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Holly Oak Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/evergreen-school-district/holly-oak-elementary-school/4764"}
