This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a librarian at an elementary school that has a very high poverty rate. I have been a classroom teacher for 10 years, but this is my second year promoting literacy all day long!!! The children at my school are very diverse, coming from every great corner of our earth. I have all grades of children, from Kindergarten to grade 8, coming to check out books from the library.

Many of my students have parents that do not speak English, so it is very difficult for the parents to sit and read with their children. This is very difficult for children that are just beginning to read because they need constant modeling of great readers. Imagine wanting to learn to read and you have no one to teach you and/or read to you.

My solution to this problem is to purchase books on CD that my students can check out from the library. I need personal CD players that can be checked out also, so that students that don't have CD players at home will have something to listen to the CD's on. The CD players will be utilized by the whole school and checked out with the books on CD.

Please help my students become lifelong readers by helping them start along the right path. By hearing books on CD numerous times, my students will hear proper modeling of reading, that they are not getting at home. This will help the students know what "good reading" sounds like, while having fun listing to the stories.
