Building relationships with students is the name of the game when it comes to teaching. If you don't take the time to have fun with your students and show them how much you care then there is not much you'll be able to teach them in the classroom. Currently I am teaching 4th grade in a Title One School. This year I am piloting a single gender class in which I teach all girls in the morning and all boys in the afternoon. It has been an amazing year so far! Being in a Title One school many of these children are coming from single parent homes. Many of which do not have a male role model. Our recess is co-ed and so we play football together. Both girls and boys alike LOVE IT! I believe this is an intricate part of their learning because I'm able to set a positive male example for them, teach them sportsmanship, and just have fun!

The reason why I think this project is so important is my desire to build community within my single gender classrooms and help use the time I spend with my children at recess to be the one that promotes a good male example, as well as, sportsmanship and camaraderie between the genders. A huge part of the single gender project is the idea of building community. This idea is built on the foundation that we are all teammates in life and that we have to learn to pull for each other to win or lose. We have to give our best in order to be successful, and seek to share in each others success and failures. My intent is that the children have this opportunity through a fun game like flag football.

The number one resource I need is the flag football belts for students to use at recess in order to play flag football. I currently play with about 30 kids. I'm quarterback for both teams, and as you can imagine it can be pretty hard to keep up with who is on whose team. Plus I have some handicapped kids that play with us as well and they don't always understand the difference between teams. So having the flags is one way to keep up with that. More importantly the kids have been enjoying me teaching them new ways to play football instead of just "throwing it down the field." The flag set I chose comes with a game book that will help me teach them more than one way to play football while promoting the ideas of community that I spoke of earlier.

Your help will make it possible for me to build stronger relationships with my students through the fun game of flag football. You can make a difference by providing an avenue for them to have a positive male influence in their lives while learning such things as sportsmanship, leadership, and how to deal with wins and losses within life. I feel confident that through your generosity the students will benefit greatly and appreciate so much more the time we have together at recess and school in general.
