Have you ever wondered who might be swimming with you on your recent fun fest at your local lake? Students of Awesome Science will be able to answer this question and many more about microorganisms through this proposed series of activities. Students will begin this activity series by collecting and examining samples of water from local lakes and ponds that they are familiar with through recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, water skiing, boating. The students will examine these samples with the naked eye, with hand lenses, and finally, with microscopes. Student groups will select one microorganism (protozoan) to identify, research, and inform their peers about by creating a multimedia presentation.

These resources will help 8th grade Awesome Science students to realize that they encounter microorganisms on a regular basis in their everyday life. These resources will also provide them with the means to study these microorganisms and create presentations to teach one another about them. While this activity series will focus on protozoans, it is entirely feasible to expand it to include microorganisms from all sorts of daily encounters that students experience.

We know that students learn science best when they have science experiences. We also know that students learn best what they are required to teach to others. This activity series is designed to include both of these 'learning stimulants'. By putting students front and center and in charge of their own and their peers' learning, their interest and achievement levels are bound to increase.

In supporting this project you are helping to foster the next generation of doctors, research scientists, and biotechnologists. The most gratifying part of my job is the knowledge I gain about the generations of students I have influenced who will soon be a part of the work force that I rely on to help me to live a full, long, and happy life. As a donor, you can know that your support is not only of assistance to these students - it is also an investment in your own future.
