Earth Science ROCKS with the Big Canyon Balloon!

My students need an opportunity to experience the forces that change the earth first hand by bringing the Big Canyon Balloon to our school.

I am a math and science teacher at an inner-city elementary school in Texas. In my position, I am fortunate to work with all children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. I especially love working with teachers and students to create hands-on learning opportunities. Science is a critical content area for learning in our core curriculum, but many students struggle with key scientific concepts and ideas. In particular, the area of earth science tends to be difficult for children to grasp due to the limitations of materials available. By providing all students with opportunities to do earth science, as opposed to just reading about it, we are able to give them the interactive learning that they need to take their understanding to the next level. In this proposal, I am hoping to bring earth science alive for our students by bringing the Big Canyon Balloon to our school. The Big Canyon Balloon will allow students to come in contact with the forces that change the earth through an interactive, life-sized learning experience. Changes on Earth over time are generally difficult for students to conceptualize. However, with this experience, students watch time speed up as a 15ft deep canyon erodes before their eyes! This hands-on, minds-on approach to teaching difficult earth science concepts will spark student interest and understanding, making abstract concepts "real". Best of all, every single one of my students, from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, will get a first hand, virtual encounter with difficult earth science concepts. Your support will ensure that every one of our 700 students will get the opportunity to participate in this experience. You will help my students to move toward becoming independent, successful, scientific thinkers. Please help bring the Big Canyon Balloon learning experience to my students!
