Festivals & Celebrations: Honoring Our Multicultural Roots

My students need several colors of acrylic paint and a variety of brushes to complete our murals.

Exploring creativity and educating ourselves on our variety of cultural backgrounds are what we do best in this art room!

Hispanic, Hmong, Chinese, Thai, Russian, Ukrainian, Native American, English...the list goes on. We are an extremely diverse school with an amazing and eclectic group of kids. While many have financial and health related hardship, they have a sense of pride in their culture and are happy to share what they know with others. Even if language is a constant barrier, these kids want to learn and grow with each other and are striving to achieve academic success in our community.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with a local artist to create murals for our Library Media Center. There are 25 panels that create half-walls around the LMC. The students think it would be great to focus each panel on a festival or holiday celebrated in all of the various cultures that our school represents. We would also include cultures that are also studied in our social studies curriculum. A few examples of celebrations that we would include are Chinese New Year, Dia de Los Muertos, Marti Gras, and Kwanzaa. Unfortunately, we do not have the dollars to finance the purchase of paint, gesso, brushes and Masonite to create these works of art.

With your financial assistance, the 500+ students at our school will all have the opportunity to contribute to this all-school endeavor. They will be able to take pride in the fact that they were a part of a collaborative piece of artwork. It will, not only beautify our school, but send the message of acceptance and celebration of all of our various ethnicities.
