Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I really do LOVE MY JOB! I have the honor of teaching 20 children who experience learning disabilities in Chicago. 88% of our students are classified as low income. Our student body is 4% White, 5% Black, and 91% Latino. Although my students experience such incredible challenges, both academic and otherwise, the reality is that they need to learn to work not twice, not 3 times, but 10 times harder than you!

Really cool things happen all the time in my school. Recently, one of my students, an 8th grader, who was thought to be borderline cognitively delayed (that translates to Mentally Retarded), completed reading her 14th novel at home. That's just in the past 6 months! And she passed quizzes on all 14 of them. Upon completion of each book, my students get to go to the "prize box," which contains trinkets from the Dollar Store or candy. Well, this 14 year old, with a huge smile on her face, declined the treat. Reading and passing the quiz was reward enough! Wow! Periodically, we have a rewards day. On this day, students who are on target with their novel reading have an alternative reading period, reward time. But, during this time, no movie and no computer. Those activities are passive. I want to bring back board games, remember those? I am asking you to purchase Clue, Yahtzee, Risk, Scrabble, and Twister so that they can experience fun activities while still being engaged.

Well, my students are attempting to reach the annual school goal of reading 25 novels at home this school year. Of course we have periodic markers to help them stay on track. After the first quarter, they should have 7 novels read (note, my girl is already 5 ahead of that goal). Early January, the goal is 13, and so on. So, what do we do as a reward? A day of board games and art activities! Yes, kids still do play...and learn...from board games and art supplies.

So, here's your opportunity to reward all of my kids every few months for reading what translates to be 2 novels at home every month and know that your reward will continue to teach, tapping into their creativity and problem solving skills. Check out the items you will be purchasing and judge for yourself! And these supplies should last two entire years, or more!!!!!
