Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students live in a high-poverty, historically gang ridden part of California, and many of them have never interacted with other children outside of their 10-block radius. Through a relationship that I created with a LEAP school in Cape Town, South Africa (which serves students from one of the low-income townships in the area), my students have the opportunity to participate in a structured pen-pal project which would connect them, through e-mail, with these South African students. In each of their email letters, the students will discuss their lives as well as topics that affect both of their communities. Although my school does have a computer lab, a lot of my students type very slowly and it is hard to reserve enough time during school hours (or to take enough time away from instruction) for them to type their emails to their pen pals. It would be extremely helpful if the class had a laptop computer on which they could type their emails during lunch, after school, or independent work time. This would ensure that students who are absent on computer lab days or students who have special needs and are slower at typing would be able to type their emails and participate in the pen pal project. By helping my class get a laptop, you will be ensuring that all of my students will be able to participate in this project, regardless of computer literacy or composition speeds. You will also be helping my students and the LEAP students in South Africa broaden their intellectual horizons and create global relationships that will allow them to be more successful in the future.
