Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching 9th grade Advanced Freshman English in a high minority based, impoverished high school is challenging. However, the students I teach have applied to and have been accepted into a rigorous, university preparation program which requires a great deal of dedication and hard work. This is a challenge, as the culture and climate of this environment is contrary to the type of motivation that is required to succeed in this type of program and beyond. For example, many of my students are from families where they will be the first to graduate from high school let alone attend a major university.

Our school district faces many budgetary restraints, and this of course rolls down to the classroom and mainly impacts the students. Obtaining books from our bookstore is on a first come, first served basis, and often when class sets are requested, they are unavailable or so damaged, they are hard to read. In our program, we believe that classic literature emersion is crucial to student success - especially when our students make it to major universities.

Obtaining this classic literature library will empower the students to have access to the fundamental tools that will not only expose them to the great classics, but will also allow them to have quality, well-cared for books in the classroom to analyze and become intimately involved with as we study this literature. I am requesting a class set and teacher guide for the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, and a class set and teacher guide for the classic drama Romeo and Juliet to ensure each student is able to read and analyze these classic works first hand.
