Playin' the Beat On My Drum, Drum, Drum!

My students need three African style djembes in order to add the heartbeat of a drum to our classroom musical adventures.

Listen carefully! Can you hear the drum beat far in the distance? Are your hands tapping and your feet moving to the beat? I know the feet of my music students are itching to move, and their hands simply can't wait to play the drums. I teach general music in a large urban school district in Oklahoma. Every student from kindergarten to fifth grade passes through my doors including the multiple disabilities students who attend our school. They love to play instruments of any kind, but drums seem to attract them like magnets! The most special thing is that often the ones who are so talented when it comes to playing percussion are ones who struggle with every small gain they might make in the homeroom classroom.

Many of my students qualify for free or reduced lunches and will probably not get the chance to play a drum of any kind -- unless I provide that opportunity at school. I would love to give them that chance both during music classes and in an after school drumming group.

With a small number of djembe to begin using in class, all the students will be able to experience the power of the drum. Blending with the small unpitched percussion instruments my classroom already has, the three djembe requested would be a wonderful beginning for powerful drum circles at my school. Since I teach music to every student kindergarten through fifth grade, over one hundred students each day can be affected by the power of the drum; learning beat and rhythm as well as feeling the calming effects of drumming on the heartbeat.

Your help will put the rhythm of the drum down deep in my students' hearts and souls. I've yet to meet the student who wasn't energized through drumming and you can make that a reality in my classroom.
