The Secret Closet

My students need 22 books including titles from Gossip Girl and the Vampire Diaries.

Every year I pay attention to the books my students read, want, and often steal. As a result every year I try to replenish those stolen, try to get what they want, and buy the ones that I see a lot of students reading. Our school is considered a high poverty level school. They do not have the kind of parental support to get to a public library and have told me they're afraid to check a book out of the school library for fear they'll forget to return the book and get a fine or have to pay for it.

"Can I look for a book?" "Sure, go ahead!" "But can I look in here?" "Where?" "In the secret closet???????????"

I have five bookcases in my room, but everyone wants to see what's in "my secret closet" where I hide the most readable, exciting books imaginable. Take an ordinary book and put it in the secret closet and it becomes special, but it is important to keep that secret closet filled with exciting books not readily available in the classroom library and always already checked out of the public library.

We "kicked butt" last year with our scores. My students and I have already set high goals. Students who only read one book allllllll last year have already finished a book in the first four weeks of school. Many have read 2,3,4, and 5, more books than they read all last year. I'm am so impressed by my students enthusiasm; whatever I'm doing I want to keep doing. Keeping the good books coming should do the trick. Thank-you so much!!!:):)
