Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a librarian at an elementary school that has a very high poverty rate. I have been a classroom teacher for 10 years, but this is my second year promoting literacy all day long!!! The children at my school are very diverse, coming from every great corner of our earth. I have all grades of children, from Kindergarten to grade 8, coming to check out books from the library.
Because of reduced funding, my library budget has been cut down to almost nothing this year. I began building up our library's Spanish bilingual books last year but still only have about 50 for over 500 bilingual students in our school. I would like to continue expanding the section this year but don't have the funds to do it. It is very unfair for my Spanish speaking students that want to read and are not at a level in English to do so with English-only books. The bilingual books help keep my students in the habit of reading and help them improve their English.
I am asking for 12 mostly hardcover books in English and Spanish that were rated highly by bilingual book reviewers in the last months. These books are interesting for the students to read and, as said earlier, will help my Spanish speakers improve their English. These books will add to our current collection and be used by students in years to come.
Please help all students find a passion for reading. Many immigrant students do not have the skills yet to read in English, but if given the tools, will learn so quickly. I think the best tool you can give them is a book!!!
