I teach at a high poverty high school in South Carolina. I have been hired to start a new theatre program. We have no resources or budget, so we are starting from scratch. I hope to get a camcorder because I have taught theatre for a long time and know the value of letting the students watch themselves perform on a regular basis. They learn a great deal about how they carry themselves; i.e., their posture, their gestures, their facial expressions, etc. This exposure will help them not only in the classroom, but later in life when the time comes for them to speak in front of others.

Our largest obstacle is lack of funds to start this theatre program. There are so many opportunities for students in the performance arena and I want to give them every opportunity to succeed. Basic tools will enable them to improve.

The camcorder is a necessary and basic tool in the theatre classroom. Receiving positive criticism from the teacher is very valuable, but I have found that being able to view oneself on screen really helps the student understand if they are projecting loud enough, if they are standing or moving properly, if they are articulate and so forth.

Your help will provide countless opportunities for students during their four years of high school to get connected with the arts. Sometimes this helps students who don't fit in elsewhere to find their niche. Theatre reaches every level of student.
