I teach sixth grade World History in rural Tennessee. We are a Title I school, with 85% of students on free or reduced-price lunch. We do not have many resources at our immediate disposal for research on projects assigned during the school year.
Throughout the year we study several ancient civilizations and included in this study are 5 Major World Religions (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism),along with their founders. I like the students to work with the religions, making comparisons and discussing similarities and differences. The students work in groups and independently on projects about the founders of the religions.
I encourage the students to read books for their research material, but our school and county libraries do not have many books on the subjects we are studying.
We need reference books in the classroom that will provide students with the information they need to complete their assignments. The books need to be on a sixth grade level and the pictures help to motivate the students to read and look through the books.
It is challenging to motivate the students to complete their work on their own. Having the resources in the classroom enables the students to make use of class time that is assigned for the completion of the project. There are many students who do not have the space or support at home to work on these projects. School is the only place they can get these assignments completed.
