Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach music at a very diverse school in an urban school district in Connecticut. I work with students in Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. All of my students love to dance and move around while listening to and experiencing music.

At this time the only resources I have at my disposal are the Internet and Teaching Movement and Dance to use in teaching my students folk dances. Neither of these provides me with the music needed to successfully teach my students American Folk Dances as well as dances from around the world. The students get extremely excited when I work with them to create a dance during class and it is a great way to improve their musicality.

What I need to help reach my students is music that they can move to appropriately as well as how to best teach them to create the group dances. The Rhythmically Moving CD set provides the music that corresponds to the book that I already have worked a bit out of. Chimes of Dunkirk and Listen to the Mockingbird are traditional American Folk Dances that will bring students back to their American roots. The Folk Dances from Around the World and African Dance and Drumming kits will allow me to expose the students to their own unique backgrounds and help provide better cultural understanding.

By funding this project, you will enable my students to experience a facet of music they already love in a new and unique way. Students will learn new dances that they can share with their families and friends while experiencing how different cultures can be beyond the words of the music and pictures on a page.
