Maps

My students need 20 World and USA maps and a Mapping Skills Overhead Kit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher in a low income public school in New York. Social Studies has been the subject area that I most struggle teaching because of the lack of adequate supplies. The Social Studies curriculum is filled with many interesting topics such as communities, New York City and geography. Living in New York is definitely a valuable resource with all its museums and history. However, I have found that teaching geography without maps is difficult. I want my second grade students to learn about the global world and the different continents and countries. I want them to understand that the United States is composed of 50 individual states and that we happen to live in one - New York. I want to build a solid foundation that they may take with them throughout their lives. I have tried by making black and white copies of world and USA maps, but it is not the same as having colored and laminated maps. I can just imagine the excitement my students will have when they get to learn about the world in which they live in. When they get to find places where they have visited and discover how far they had to travel. They will be able to locate the United States on a world map. They will be able to locate New York and New York city on a United States map. They will be able to use the compass rose to explain the direction needed to travel to various places. Most importantly they will understand that they are part of a world inhabited by many different countries and people. Having maps will not only teach them about geography, but hopefully will spark their curiosity and help them think of ways to help the world.
