My students need slides of various microscopic organisms in order to fully understand our study of microbiology. This is much more effective than pictures.
I teach 8th grade science in a culturally diverse area. The majority of my students are African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Asian/Pacific. My school is one of only two identified as "equity plus" in our school system. This means that we have over 50% of our student population on free/reduced lunch. 11% of our population are students with special needs.
The obstacle I am facing is a lack of science supplies. My students are extremely interested in microlife; however, our school has no microscope slides of actual microscopic organisms. When viewing pond samples of microscopic organisms, students are totally into viewing samples under the microscopes. It would be GREAT to have preserved slides of organisms not found in our pond samples.
All I need to make our study of microlife complete is actual preserved microscope slides. It is my experience that pictures in books do not excite students. Looking at actual organisms does!! This helps create a visual image that enable students to learn and want to learn more. Viewing organisms under the microscope makes them feel like actual scientists and more aware of the world around them.
You can make learning "real" for my students. Please help get them out of the science book and into real life! :) Please help students see what they won't see without your help.
