I Am Over My Head With This Old Over Head!

My students and I need a new Elmo Teacher's Tool Document Camera.

Students can't see and they are not blind! Inner city, low income, inclusion class of 26 students; 14 of them have a personal literacy plan.

The blackboards were installed when the building was built...well over 60 years ago. Chalk does not show up on them. So I reverted to an overhead projector. This was better however bright room, expensive overhead transparencies, and breaking bulbs with small budget is really cramping my style and hindering visual learning for my students.

I would love to get an ELMO! This technology is invaluable to me and my students. Having such a needy population I rely on visual learning to help students achieve. I often will have what I call “overhead people” come up and display work or show how they solved a word problem. Using the old overhead the students have to transcribe their work on to a clear transparency and often the markers are too fat to clearly show the work, not to mention the time involved in transcribing. With the new system, “ELMO” I just have them bring up their paper and lay it under the projector! BAM! The original work can be seen clearly and in color! Any notes I make can also be shown. My notes and teacher directed lessons will be captivating and clearly seen by all! That is the gift of sight for a visual learner…and with so many at risk readers they need the visual advantage.

When I had my underprivileged students volunteering to bring in some of their dollars to get the new ELMO (they have no idea the cost) so they can see better…I had no choice but to write a grant to try and get some help with presentation. In these tough economic times this would be the last thing on my school departments list…however it is first on mine. I need to find a way to work out my presentation predicament and I know the ELMO is it. The students will appreciate it, learn from it and realize that help is out there if you really need it! I even had one student say when they become a business man they are going to help buy things for teachers, if this did nothing more than start a cycle of helping out others, it was already a win in my book. I look forward to showing you how the students use ELMO! Thank you.
