My students need various overhead math materials and manipulatives, including 30 sets of algebra tiles, a set of dry erase graphing boards, transparency film, copy paper, pens and a teacher's record book.

The students at the school I teach at must be engaged at all times in order to ensure understanding of the material. I teach ninth grade Algebra I students (although there are several 16 - 17 year old freshmen in my classes), and success in the ninth grade is a critical determining factor for how far students will go in high school in the inner city school where I work. The school is in a very high need community, is classified as a Low-income Public School, and is in one of the worst urban inner-city districts in the nation. However, I have learned that although my students appear to have no interest whatsoever in learning, they actually expect, need, and thrive on teachers to not give up on them, and to try various strategies to reach them.

I am dealing with students that are expected to learn Algebra I in a year, but have very poor Basic math skills. These students need to feel, see, and touch materials to get them to understand fractions (which many of them still do not understand), negative numbers, and many other math topics. Each teacher at the school was given two packages of copy paper to last them an entire school year, while there is only one copy machine working in the entire building. The school is also in its first year of restructuring because too many of the students were not doing well in previous years.

I desperately need various overhead materials to show the students how to use the algebra tiles I will provide them during certain activities. The manipulatives I have requested will be used to engage my students in learning math because traditional teaching methods will not do it. This project will help keep my students engaged, which in turn will ensure their success in high school.

Your help will ensure that my students find learning useful, engaging, but more importantly, fun. I do not want students cutting my class because they think it is boring (which they will do) because in the long run, they will only be hurting themselves. Your help will make my students feel as if they should go to class before they "miss something."
