Reading + Writing = Success!

My students need 4 copies each of 28 books that are part of the Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop Units of Study.

I am a writing teacher for students from Kindergarten to Fifth grade. My school services a large population of low income students in the inner city's west side. Our area, as a part of the larger city's school district, services some of the most challenging population of students in the entire district. Due to our staff's diligent & hard work, we have just become the highest ranking school in this difficult district, and we intend to remain on top and beyond. Though we are a neighborhood school and have limited boundaries, parents seek out our teaching staff & school to help their children to better and reach higher.

However, this is a challenge that we couldn't possibly face alone, which is why we look to the larger community for aide. Our budget is stretched thin, we have lost 2.5 teaching positions and several key programs. But these shortcomings will not stop our teachers and students, especially when it comes to Writing Workshop and the reading of wonderful stories to help. The hurrays and smiles that spread across our students faces when Writing Workshop time rolls around makes everything worth while. Our children have become voracious readers and are quickly moving towards becoming like writers. The excitement has simply taken over!

To keep up with their enthusiasm and love for writing stories about their lives, stories that are close and are meaningful to them, and even stories they invent, I am looking to acquire a handful of the books that are recommended as key to writing success by Lucy Calkin's Writing Workshop Units of Study. These wonderful books allows students to use the talents of known authors by studying their craft and trying out the many creative styles embedded within. These are books students love to read, love to hear, and love to relate to... which then allows them to pour their wonderful imagination into their very own, unique stories.

With your help I can keep up with the enthusiasm and excitement that has swept across my little kinder kids and bowled its way all the way up to my big fifth graders. Reading coupled with writing is one of the MOST powerful skills you can combine to guarantee success, both in school and in life. Help me to provide this powerful combination to turbo charge my students and their love for Writing Workshop!
