Drums To Learn On

My students need to experience the world of learning through drumming. There are many studies that show rhythmic reading is beneficial to diverse learning students. The use of a classroom set of hand drums would increase the learning capacity of my classroom by helping students tap out words, create poetry, and create new methods of reading to increase comprehension and reading fluidity.

I teach music in a rural county elementary school with approximately 496 students, grades k-5th.

Students here are very interested in learning how to play different instruments, but there is no money to buy the needed supplies. The use of drums would help the students become more engaged in the learning process. It would also create the opportunity for the students to create their own programs for the community.

Students need to feel that sense of accomplishment when performing for community members. In receiving drums for an entire classroom, this goal would be more attainable. Students would have the opportunity to practice and create their own rhymes, poems, and dances to the rhythms they composed.

These students work hard in the regular classroom and are not able to use their creativity. Given the opportunity to use drums, they would excel in their creativity, helping some realize a different part of themselves. Students who participate in music tend to be more outgoing within the community in their later years. They also tend to have better critical thinking skills because of their enhanced creativity. Music matters and can make a huge impact on children's lives. If you want to make a lasting impression on a child, bring them music.
