Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Biology and Advanced Integrated Science in a school that was recently classified as a "High Poverty, High Performance" school by the State of California. My students are 60% Latino, 30% white, 5% Tongan, and the remainder are mostly African American and Chinese.

The area I teach is world famous for the role it has played in the computing and Internet revolutions of the past 20 years. A lot of wealth is being generated here, but much of it is beyond the reach of the low-income Mexican immigrant families that constitute the majority of my students. I hope that by increasing my use of technology in the classroom I can prepare my students to compete for jobs in the computer technology industry.

I would like to have a document camera in my classroom to aid in engaging students with limited English capability by increasing my ability to include visual examples in my teaching. The majority of my students speak Spanish as their first language, so engaging with complex texts in my class has proven difficult. Having a document camera will allow me to project a variety of materials (textbooks, worksheets, pictures, lab equipment...) up on the wall where the whole class can see it. I have found that the best way to reach my English Learner students is to use a lot of visual aids and examples. With a document camera, I can help students work through difficult worksheets and put up examples of student work as its being created.
