This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Did you know you have to learn algebra in 4th grade now? Didn't it used to be junior high school? Not any more... my 4th grade students are not only learning English but also have to learn advanced math. My school is a Title I school which means that most of our students are on free and reduced lunches. We have a high-need population.

Our state has just faced a $408 billion reduction to the education budget this year. There is not a lot of extra funds for materials that enhance learning and make it accessible for students from all backgrounds. Algebra is a large focus for 4th grade math and it is a difficult concept for many.

I have requested Hands-On Equations. This learning system allows students to visually and physically solve equations using math manipulatives. This will allow my second language learners to access curriculum standards without necessarily having to have mastery of language. The supply set also comes with a video for students who are more visual, to show them exactly how the manipulatives work.

With your help, the students in my class will have the opportunity to learn the necessary skills they will need to be successful in math and science. These skills will establish a necessary and solid foundation that will be built on in every successive school year through college.
