Inspiring African Americans as Class Role Models

My students need a variety of African American hero books on CDs in order to better understand their history and find positive role models for their lives.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a Caucasian third grade teacher who teaches the most incredible students math, reading, writing, social studies, and science in DC. My school has a 100% African American population. Unfortunately, most of my students are on free lunch and live in poverty. The neighborhood around the area lacks role models for them to look up to.

My babies unfortunately live in homes where abuse, neglect, little food and money cause them to fight even harder than most kids to survive in this world. They see way more negative role models than positive. I have 28 students this year who do not look like me or have the same history or background as I do. This makes it difficult to make them believe that they can overcome environmental obstacles that are not in their control. I do care deeply that they grow up to be proud African American men and women. I want them to read and learn about outstanding African Americans who paved the way for their better future. Even though our school encourages the teachers to teach the students about their these amazing people I unfortunately do not have the resources that I feel would make the most impact.

I feel that exposing my babies to positive African American men and woman through books on CDs will give them those role models to inspire them to be just as great! Having the opportunity to read and/or listen to these books gives my readers and non-readers the ability to learn and be impacted by the greatness of these past leaders.

Your help will make it possible for my children to become the proud African American men and women I know they will grow up to be. You hold the power of providing them with the learning opportunities to not only improve their reading skills, but to have someone to look up to in a world where they do not see much inspiration to be great! Please support the future leaders of the world, my students, on their journey of greatness in a world where they must fight harder to be successful!
