Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students do not learn unless they are engaged with a wide range of resources! I am a fifth grade CTT teacher. I have a class of 25 students, 15 of whom are general ed and 10 of whom are classified as special education students. Additionally, many of the students are English Language Learners. In our classroom we promote unity and celebrate diversity. The children in this class work together cooperatively and pay little attention to their educational classifications. Instruction is differentiated to meet the individual needs of each student. My co-teacher and I differentiate by adapting print materials and by incorporating technology such webquests, smartboards, and laptops. In our room we emphasize the fact that all students learn differently and teach the students to become advocates for their own learning styles.

Raising the level of student engagement is a critical step in the learning process. Children who are not engaged in a lesson miss out on important skills and content. Increasing the quality of and the amount of technology in a classroom is one way we can raise the level of student engagement in any classroom.

A document camera would significantly increase the quality of my reading, writing, science, math and social studies lessons because it would allow the students to have greater access to resources. A document camera is used to project both 3-dimensional objects and 2-dimensional documents/books. It is more efficient than a traditional overhead projector because documents do not need to be photocopied onto transparencies before being projected. A document camera allows for spontaneity. One way to empower students is to use their work to demonstrate standards. A document camera would allow me to present their work during mid-workshop interruptions. By presenting actual student work the other students start to believe that they can reach that level of mastery as well. A document camera can also be used to enlarge materials for students with visual impairments. Students can also use a document camera to share their responses and actively participate during lessons. For example, during a math lesson students can come to the document camera to demonstrate the steps they took to solve a word problem.

Your efforts in helping me attain a document camera will increase student exposure to more resources and will increase student efficacy across all subject areas. This is a tool that can be adapted to fit all content areas and will allow us to remove the barriers that prevent our most disabled students from succeeding in the classroom.
