Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My afterschool program is in a poor neighborhood in North Texas and gives students a safe place to be, get help with homework, and lets them be creative.
These elementary school students need something to enrich their lives and I believe music is an important part of education and life. Many students have shown an interest in music but they do not want to join the orchestra. So I would like to start a percussion class. Here, the students can learn more than just drumming. Being a percussionist takes motivation and discipline and to play in an ensemble takes listening skills and teamwork.
To get this project "Drumming Along" we need multiple sets of Drum Sticks, a snare drum set and PERCUSSION METHOD BOOKS. Playing and reading music stimulates all aspects of learning and personal development such as students becoming independent thinkers, responsible, and believe it or not, better in reading and math.
The students in this very low income neighborhood have seen many bad things. It would bring a smile on a child's face and let them know that someone cares. It is also an incredible feeling to play in front of friends and fellow students and have them applaud for a great performance.
