Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Middle School Instrumental Music in a very low income area. My kids, for the most part, use school owned instruments and do not have a lot of outside resources to further their musical education.

Unfortunately, I only teach my kids every other day. Most of the children live in apartments and practicing can be an issue, particularly when their parents/guardians haven't a clue what they are practicing.

Most of the students have access to either an MP3 player or a home computer and can access the Internet. I came up with the idea of recording our rehearsals and concerts so they could not only play along with the recording to improve, but could share their work with their parents.

Most of my students come from families that have 2 working parents. A lot of time these parents get home from their jobs too late to enjoy a concert performance by their children. Using an MP3 recorder, I could record concerts to share with the parents. I also could record their rehearsals so the children could play along with the performances and improve their own abilities. I have tried this with a video camera but, being kids, they were more interested in watching than listening, and the audio component was not good. This way the children will HAVE to listen at home and this listening skill will carry over to their classwork and performances.
