I am a second-year kindergarten teacher in a diversified area of Southern California. My students have a very broad range of language abilities, many of whom are English Language Leaners. Rhyming is a difficult concept for my kindergarteners because they are just building their phonemic awareness. Many struggle the entire year to identify first and last sounds. Rhyming is especially challenging for my English Language Learners, due to the fact that many speak a language where the concept of rhyming does not even exist. Building phonemic awareness is a precursor to reading. Those who struggle as readers do not have a solid foundation in letter sounds. Part of my classroom's daily routine involves reading a nursery rhyme and utilizing picture flashcards, most of which I create on the computer, to identify the rhyming words. It is a struggle for me to find time to work with individual students needing extra support in rhyming because I currently do not have enough images or any rhyming manipulatives that allows students to work independently or in small groups. The five rhyming centers I have selected contain images, manipulative objects and rhyming games that will allow my students to demonstrate and practice their rhyming sills while having fun all year long. Imagine the satisfaction a five-year-old will have when they are able to transition from the beginning of the school year using the magnetic rhyming images from the "Rhyming Sounds Sorting Board" to writing their own rhyming words on individual write and wipe boards from the "Spin to Rhyme Word Builder Game." I will also be able to better assess my students in rhyming when I can work with them in small groups, watching them match rhyming items from the "Rhyming Phonemic Awareness Box." These individual centers will keep all of my students engaged in our rhyming lessons, regardless of their level of need, while providing me with the opportunity to work with smaller groups of students on this important pre-reading skill. Help my kindergarteners find time to rhyme by providing us with these five rhyming centers.
