I teach a form of math called connected mathematics. Connected mathematics challenges my seventh graders to discuss and understand the reason behind the algorithms they use. I find this method very useful not only for my regular math students, but for the special education inclusion class as well.

Many of my students are very poor, in fact over 50% receive free or reduced lunch. Over the past few years I have seen a growing desire to learn in my classroom. When students want to share and explain their work it becomes very tedious to copy it onto the board or overhead, causing many students to loose attention.

It has become increasingly difficult to understand a student's approach to a problem without seeing his or her paper. With a document camera students will be able to quickly project their work so we can discuss it. This document camera will take the place of my overhead projector and will be used to launch, explore, and summarize lessons. I will also be able to project my graphing calculator so students can follow along easier.

The best part about the addition of a document camera to my room is the impact it will have on my spatial learners. Many students, including myself, have a deeper understanding when they are able to see the explanation instead of just hearing it. I guarantee this document camera will be used daily to encourage discussion and understanding through visualization.
