Feeding Childrens' Need to Read

My students need 22 copies of "Freckle Juice" and "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom", along with a teacher's guide for "Freckle Juice".

I teach at a Title One school where many of the students are reading below grade level and are unable to read chapter books independently. Those few students capable of reading at grade level come from homes where chapter books are unavailable. This situation tugs at my heart because these wonderful children have the desire to learn but the school curriculum does little to make the subject fun. I use the adopted language arts series and have found the children not only bored but test scores are plummeting. Since my job as a teacher is to foster academic development, I am prepared to intertwine language arts strategies to ensure that these chapter books are standard based. I am also prepared to make the unit interesting and fun. The sound of these well deserving children discussing/debating Judy Blume's "Freckle Face" and Louis Sachar's "There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom" can be a wonderful sound heard few too many times. A sound of engagement. With your help, I am confident we can feed their need to read and bring a wealth of knowledge and imagination into their lives.
