Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a ninth year teacher in an inner-city public school in New York, I have been privileged to teach children from 4th grade to 6th grade. This upcoming school year, I will be teaching 4th grade for the third year in a row. Our school system has developed a new Scope and Sequence for 4th grade social studies and accordingly, my school has ordered the requisite new textbooks. In reading the new Scope and Sequence (a framework for the units of study and the order in which they are to be taught) I noticed that it did not include geography. It briefly touches upon the geography of the state of New York but it does not include geography terms, how to read maps or study of a globe. Geographic skills are so incredibly important but sadly lacking in many of today’s students. I know that many of the 4th graders that I will be teaching in the Fall have not been taught many of the geography skills that they will need to succeed on future state social studies exams or in life. Every year I teach geography skills for the first month of school. These skills include identifying and using map features such as compass roses, map keys, scales, latitude and longitude lines. They also include the similarities and differences between maps and globes, drawing maps, and making globes. The resources that I am requesting to aid in my students’ learning of geography are 20 copies each of Sparkcharts’ “U.S. map,” Flashcharts’ “The Fifty States” and “My Map Book.” I am also requesting 3 copies each of “There’s A Map On My Lap” and “My Map Book”, 1 copy of “Daily Geography Practice” and 2 Explorer globes. With these resources my students will be able to learn, utilize and master various geographic skills. These are skills that will stay with them not only for the rest of their school careers but for the rest of their lives.
