Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For a few precious years, we are all eager to be scientists and excited to learn. I am fortunate enough to be a part of that part of my students' lives, as the teacher of a kindergarten class. I teach in a high-need community of English language learners; although my job is hard, I am also blessed in that I get to be one of the first people to show them so many things about the world--a job that is always fun!

These days, there is such an emphasis placed on reading and writing--I admit, I have "fallen victim" to that...it is my job to have done so, and I do everything I can on this front. However, I also believe that there is so much more out there for my students to learn; things about our world and phenomena of every day life that they have no awareness or understanding of. These are things like magnetism, animals, properties of water, our five senses, and so many more. I want to bring these things into our classroom and make discovering and exploration a bigger part of our curriculum. However, as seems to be the case with everything, we need some basic tools to begin to make that happen.

I am looking for a some fun new discovery tools to put into the hands of my students. I want to expose them to things that they have never experienced before, and encourage them to ask questions and research. I have also asked for tools like puzzles and dramatic play sets to have my students work with together so that they can bring these scientific concepts into their conversations with one another. Any teacher will tell you that the more interaction a child has with a concept, the more likely they will be to learn it.

Children are eager and creative. We will always find ways to get excited about new things in and out of the classroom. But the more I can bring into the classroom for them, the more I can know that I am meeting their educational needs on multiple levels. Your help in making this possible is truly magical--in a society that is quickly forgetting how to teach anything but reading and math, my students will be so fortunate to get their hands on something bigger, something mysterious, something exciting...something more.
