My literacy students need 35 copies of the book "Copper Sun" for whole group instruction and 5 copies of "Fire from the Rock" for small group enrichment.

Anyone who has ever taught knows that teachers learn from their students as much as their students learn from them. It was no surprise that several of my students insisted that I read "Copper Sun" by Sharon M. Draper. I devoured this amazing piece of literature in two days! I instantly realized that it would fit perfectly into our year long literature theme of teens in crisis/conflict. Although the main character lived hundreds of years ago, many of her struggles speak to students today. I am now obsessed with reading this novel with my 8th Grade LA classes next year. Due to budget constraints my students run the risk of missing out on an important learning experience that is a part of many of their personal histories. If I can obtain 35 copies of "Copper Sun", I will be able to expose my classes to this amazing piece of literature. To accompany this, I would also like to have 5 copies of Sharon M. Draper’s newest piece of historical fiction, "Fire from the Rock". I hope to select a small group of ‘literary experts’ from my classes to help us compare these two books, which are her only pieces of historical fiction to date. This novel will not only address our Language Arts curriculum, but also align with the Social Studies curriculum. After reading and researching both books, I plan to have the students hold debates about the historical aspects of each novel. My students are faced with hardships most of us could never even dream of, but they still manage to give of their time and resources to help others whenever possible. Thank you in advance for your help in educating and raising up the youth of our country.
