Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a 4th-8th grade special education class. My class is self-contained, so the students are with me for all academic subjects. My students have a variety of disabilities, including mental retardation, ADHD, hearing impairments, and learning disabilities. Our school is location in a violent and chaotic neighborhood. Over 98% of the students receive a free or reduced price lunch. The school is very old, dark, and dirty.

My students are some of the warmest, kindest, and considerate children I have ever met. However, our school is often a dangerous and scary place for them to be. Due to their disabilities they are bullied and secluded more than their peers. They are very strong, but often the environment of their homes and schools is too much to handle. They love reading and learning as much as they can, but it is hard to concentrate when you hear children yelling outside and throwing rocks at the door. Our school has no windows and very few resources.

I would like to make my classroom a place where students can escape the chaos and feel comfortable being themselves. When they feel safe, they can learn anything they want to. In order to do this, I need materials to create a space in the room that is cozy and comfortable to all students (mats and a beanbag chair). Also, many of my students are non-readers. With personal CD players and books on CD, they can find a space of their own to enjoy books. The boom box can be used to play relaxing music from around the world to instantly relax the students.

With your support my students can have a place in the school where they can relax and learn. They will be able to read-along with books on CD, or sit on the beanbag and read a book to the whole class. They will know that no matter what goes on outside the door of our classroom, someone cares about them and wanted them to be happy, comfortable, safe, and smart.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
