Kindergartners Investigate Their World

My students need 12 items such as books and picture cards about animals and animal habitats, weather, and plants. They also need sand and water tubs, sand, and toys with which to investigate the properties of sand and water.

I am a first year teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area. I work in a school that primarily serves students with special needs, particularly students with Autism and Communication Disorders. My classroom is one with thirteen sweet kindergarteners with incredible curiosity about their world. Because we are in an urban setting it is difficult to find activities that my students can engage in that are hands on. Our school grounds are covered in asphalt and fenced so that we cannot get out to look at the trees, insects, and other natural parts of our environment. Frequently, it seems as though students with special needs are given the short end of the stick in education. They are often confined to the last portable classroom behind the bleachers, hidden out of sight with little interaction with the rest of the school population. With the upcoming budget cuts to education in California, this situation will be even worse. The mission my school upholds is not only to teach these students the CA state standards, but also to give them the confidence that they need to live on their own in the world. Sadly, our school is similar to all those portables behind the bleachers. In fact, all but four classrooms ARE portables. The playground is in a sad state of repair, the asphalt is broken in many places, and the buildings are old. My classroom was left by the teacher last year with virtually no supplies for science. Many of the teachers at the school do not even teach science, or do so minimally because they have no supplies! I would like to bring a bit of nature to them by providing more engaging activities for our science centers. My students need My students need books and picture cards about animals and animal habitats, weather, and plants. They also need sand and water tubs, sand, and toys with which to investigate the properties of sand and water. In our society, professions in science and technology are ever-increasing. You can help fuel the natural curiosity that my students already have by supporting our classroom. Today, these students are five-year-olds in a kindergarten classroom--where will they be in 15 years? By helping me bring science to them you can help engage them in education, in science, and in our world.
