I teach at a large school in North Carolina where we have a diverse population of children. About one-third of my students are learning English as their second language.

My reading block class consists of students who are on the pass/fail bubble and are in need of extra help. It is my responsibility to work with each child on his/her individual ability level in order to help him/her grow as a reader.

I would like to provide my students an alternative way to develop their reading skills. I would like to have centers where my students can work on their reading skills when they are finished with their classwork. I found two fabulous resources called Word Families Instant Literacy Center and Word Families Linking Cubes Instant Center. The students will build words by linking together color-coded cubes with beginning sounds and rimes on them. The kits will provide my students hands-on manipulatives that will target the following skills: • Identifying onsets & rimes • Initial phoneme substitution • Identifying spelling patterns • Decoding words The best part of these manipulatives is that the students will be having so much fun making new words that they will forget that they are also learning.
