My Students Love Bugging Out

My students need The Very Hungry Caterpillar Hardcover Book, Painted Lady Butterfly Life Cycle Poster, Painted Lady Butterfly Model Set, a 3-Pack Of Painted Lady Butterfly Larvae, Brassica Butterfly Eggs, 5 Packs Of Luna Moth Cocoons, 2 Packs Of Saturnid Moth Cocoons, a Giant Ant Farm and Replacement Ants, Sand and Food, 2 Packs Of Millipedes, a House Cricket Life Cycle Kit, an Amazing Bugs Ladybug Packet with Coupon, Ladybug Life Cycle Poster, and Amazing Bugs Mantis Packet with coupon.

I teach Third grade at a low income elementary school in San Francisco. Our school is located in an affluent neighborhood, but our students come from some of the roughest parts of town. Many languages and cultures are represented in our student population. In my class of only 18 students, you will see the faces of African-American, Native American, Mexican, Samoan, Chinese and Vietnamese children. My students have been together since Kindergarten. They are all friends and they all love each other. It is absolutely wonderful to see.

One of things my students have in common is that they are all fascinated with living things. I am forever trying to find a home for this insect or that insect that they brought in from recess, or listening to a story about a gigantic bug that they saw at home. It got even worse when our neighbors created a community garden outside of our classroom. I only have so many containers that hold slugs and roly-poly bugs.

This proposal involves giving my students the opportunity to investigate the lives and life cycles of various creatures first-hand, right in our classroom. So much of our Science curriculum revolves around “reading” the text – instead of “doing.” With your help, my students will be able to “do” by experiencing these living things directly. To help inspire them, I am asking for the classic Eric Carle book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” to introduce our butterfly experience, complete with a Painted Lady Butterfly Life Cycle Poster, a Painted Lady Butterfly Model Set that they can experience hands-on, and Painted Lady Butterfly Larvae that they can watch turn into cocoons before becoming butterflies. I am also requesting Brassica Butterfly Eggs that grow on plants like cabbage and Brussels sprouts, as well as Luna Moth Cocoons, Saturnid Moth Cocoons, a Giant Ant Farm including replacement ants, sand and food, several Millipedes, a Cricket life cycle kit, a Praying Mantis life cycle kit, a Ladybug life cycle kit, and a Ladybug Poster.

I think the world of my students, and want nothing less than the world for them. I see so much potential in their beautiful faces, and I am confident that providing them with this variety of living creatures to experience and care for will be a life changing encounter for most of them. These kids need all the help they can get. By providing the funds necessary for this proposal you can play a part in their fragile futures. Help to empower them to let their minds wander while they observe and nurture these creatures that they love so much. You never know what might come of feeding a child’s curiosity.
