This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a creative arts and communication magnet school located in a needy community. I teach 5th graders. This is my last opportunity to impress upon them the joy that comes from serving others. Our school theme is to make the world a better place, and that's what I would like to do with this project.
I would like to teach my students how to knit a beanie and then have them donate it to one of the many homeless shelters in our area. We will make caps for both adults and children. This will help our homeless population stay warmer in the winter. Maybe, if one of my students sees one of them wearing it, they will know they have helped make the world a better place. They will also learn a skill which is fast disappearing among today's youth.
I gathered some money for the knitting rings but I am in need of the yarn to make the hats. I know that by doing this project, students will learn to follow directions, pay attention to details when working, and find the pleasure that comes from creating something beautiful, as well as useful and then sharing it with someone else. If time and resources allow, my students will be able to make one for themselves so that they might remember this experience.
Only through your donation can this project happen. Winter will be upon us soon and many heads and hearts could be warmer because they are wearing a hat made possible by you. My students will know the joy and pleasure that comes from giving of themselves that others' burdens might be lighter. Please help me make a difference in many lives.
