Books hold the key to countless adventures! Hi, I am a first year teacher of fifth grade students at a Title One school in California. Let me start by thanking you for taking your time to read my proposal.

My students are from minority families living in a low socioeconomic area, and resources are hard to come by for both students and teachers. I knew that coming into my job, yet my experience has been just as rewarding as it is challenging. Our fifth grade team (three and a half classes) share one class set of "The Sign of the Beaver" books by Elizabeth George Speare. The set we have is quite old; several books are missing, and many of the books have ripped covers and the binding is falling apart. There are barely enough "okay" books for one class to use.

If we could have 40 new copies of "The Sign of the Beaver" it would be enough for all the students in one class to have a good, quality book to read. When the books we use are in good condition, there's something about that quality that makes the kids excited to read and learn; it provides a different, more energized and enthusiastic classroom atmosphere.

Please help us create that excitement for learning and an energized atmosphere in our fifth grade classrooms. When I was a child I would take a book to my room and read for hours to escape my circumstances. Many of our students have such awful home lives that they will find an avenue of escape, either good or bad. Please help provide a way for our students to become excited about books, which can take them beyond their circumstances to adventures in the woods or anywhere else they may wish to go. Thank you so much!
