Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Freedom Writers grew up in Long Beach, CA. My Freedom Writers are denizens of the very similar Bronx, NY. Both groups of High School students face numerous adversities that dare them to fail in life. But like the brave Freedom Riders, both Gruwell's Freedom Writers and My Bronxian Freedom Writers defy the odds and stand up tall. I teach ninth and twelfth grade students in a low-income, high-crime neighborhood of the Bronx. And although my predominantly Hispanic and African American students face issues of poverty, drugs, and crime on a daily basis, they still come to school with a smile on their face and a pencil in their hands!

Due to a severe lack of funding at my school, my classroom is in sore need of Independent Reading books for my students. My students are starving for books they can really relate to. Most of the classics we have at hand are unfamiliar and foreign material to them. They are clamoring to read books that will truly speak to the experiences they go through on a daily basis.

Having read The Freedom Writer's Diary and Erin Gruwell's inspirational memoir, Teach With Your Heart, I know that the Freedom Writers are just the role models my students desperately need in their lives. By providing class copies of this inspirational text, you will teach my students that circumstances do not dictate success.

My students are so talented and bright. However, they rarely see people like "them" make it in life. I know that this book will provide them not only with the impetus to write, but further, it will show them that the sky is only the minimum limit. Your generous donation will create many more Freedom Writers that will change the face, the hopes, and the dreams of our country!
