One of the most rewarding things about being a teacher is watching a child grow into a confident reader. I am a first year teacher teaching 1st grade in a very diverse area. My class consists of many levels of learners. I have English Language Learners who are students that come with limited English skills and non-English speaking parents at home. I also have students who get no help with homework and no one to read to or with them at night. I also have students that came to first grade already reading and writing at or above grade level. It is a challenge to meet all the needs of these students in my classroom. During my daily Literacy Block, students complete literacy centers while I pull small guided reading groups. I am always looking for fun and hands-on activities that actively engage my students. Sight Words are a challenge for many students. These words are words that cannot be sounded out and make up 50-75% of everything that we read. As you can imagine, becoming fluent in sight words is essential for reading success! The "Tubs of Sight Words tiles" and "Sight Word Tactile Cards" would be perfect for providing hands-on practice that students need to master each word. Students would be practicing words in a variety of ways such as matching words, writing words, unscrambling words, and using words in a sentence. By having 3 different levels of words, the students will be able to work on sight words and activities appropriate for them instead of everyone doing the same words. I have also asked for the "Beat the Clock Sight Word Set" to compliment the sight word tubs and activity cards. This set contains write on/wipe off boards and timers where the students are able to time themselves reading the sight words, record their times and try again to beat their personal best. This will allow the students to really see the progress they are making and in turn will motivate them even more. This set also contains 3 levels of sight words so that students can work on words on their level. This is a great hands-on way to make practicing sight words fun. You will make it possible for my students to have continued practice with their sight words. This will help build their confidence and their sight word skills. Building sight vocabulary will also improve comprehension and fluency. You will have a part in helping my students become successful and confident readers. Thank you for considering my proposal!
