My students need 7 grammar books and various leveled books for independent reading, including 24 copies of "War With Grandpa".

I am a fifth grade teacher in a new charter school. Our school was developed for refugees from war-torn countries predominantly Somalia and Kenya. All of my students qualify for free lunches and the majority of my students are English Language Learners. Our school is a charter school, meaning we are a tuition-free public school offering a unique educational program. Our teachers and staff are sensitive to the diverse needs of our students. Many students arrive at our school speaking little or no English. With our intense math and Language Arts program our goal is to help these children succeed in school and in life and not be "left behind".

As a third-year charter school, our funding is extremely limited. Other than textbooks, the school is unable to provide many necessary educational supplies. Simple materials such as paper and pencils are purchased personally by classroom teachers. When it comes to independent reading books, I rely heavily on donated books from retired teachers. My classroom's need is great yet our supply is scarce. How can I teach students to read without any books at their level?

I am requesting several books including Junie B. Jones, Judie Moodie, and Horrible Harry for my lower level readers. In addition I am in need of 7 grammar books to teach my students parts of speech and an illustrated writing prompt book. These books will allow me to teach students of various reading levels in small group and one on one instruction.

With just a few more books I can help students find a love for literature. My students will become proficient readers and writers. They will become active, contributing members of the world around them- Thanks to you!
